Web Hosting Options

2003-12-19

The option of Web Hosting you choose for your e-businesses is largely dependent on the scale and complexity of your online presence. The cost of web Hosting operation can vary from less than $10 to thousands of dollars a month.

Using a Web Hosting Company Using a Web Hosting company is the most cost-effective way to bring your e-businesses online. You can manage your online operation with a Web browser and Internet connection. For less than $10 a month, you can operate with your own domain name, create simple database, monitor the site traffic and manage the content.

  • Domain Name Registration Most Web Hosting companies offer domain registration as well, and some of them will give you free domain name with one year of hosting service subscription. Picking an ideal domain name is a challenging task and demand creativity since most (if not all) of simple and descriptive domain names has been taken.
  • Basic Web Hosting Services basic web Hosting services include FTP for uploading files, programming language support (perl, php or asp), email accounts, and simple site traffic statistics. Some companies even support database within $10 a month budget.
  • Premum Web Hosting Services Premium Web Hosting services offer online credit card processing, merchant account, advanced Web site monitoring and etc. They are not, of course, covered by $10 a month charge.

Co-Location The major limitation of using a Web Hosting company is that you don't have full control of the web server and database server. You can't install, upgrade and configure the web server to fit you specific needs, you can't use the programming languages you prefer. For instance, most hosting companies don't support JSP (Java Server Page). The alternative option of Web hosting is to use co-location service. You place or rent dedicated servers (physical machines) at a hosting company's data center. You could have full control of the machines without worrying about infrastructure of network connection and operations. Co-location service usually cost about a few hundred dollars a month. The other option is Virtual Private Servers, which will cost less than dedicated servers.

Building Web Hosting Infrastructure For organizations, they have sufficient IT expertise, infrastructure, budget, and using the Internet for both Internal and external Web presence, they will build the Web Hosting infrastructure in house.
